Adapting materials

Hi everybody,

In the previous post, I talked about some digital platforms that I have learned from my professor. Also, we discussed the beneficial parts of them and how to implement them in your online classrooms.

There are prepared materials and activities which are effective for teaching. However, according to learners' needs, teachers sometimes need to modify and change things in the ready-made activities. First, I'm going to show different websites where you can find prepared materials.  Then, we will discuss how to adapt some of them in detail.

Before we choose any material, we need to know which material is appropriate, the availability of technology, if it is easy for learners to use or not, the authenticity of the materials, the validity of it, and the interactivity.

So, where we can access different and useful materials? We talked about some of them in the last post and we concentrated on how we create an activity. However, now we will focus on previously prepared materials.

5 Minute English is a website designed to give explanations of grammar, vocabulary, idioms, etc. Also, it provides many exercises with answers.

Englisch-Hilfen is a website that offers many materials which will make your teaching process easier and more effective for the learners. In Englisch Hilfen, you can find tests and exams on different topics, download worksheets, and a lot of games are provided.

games4esl provides engaging resources for teaching English. Teachers can find ESL games, PPT games, worksheets, exercises, and quizzes.

Now, if we want to match the material with students' needs we need to make some changes to the activity. For example, re-ordering, modification, deletion, simplification, and addition.

For instance, I have this worksheet and I want to modify and change some parts of it. Firstly, I will delete the animals' names in both languages and leave it empty for students to fill them.
